CBD and Weight Loss
By Aura Lakshmi
One little known fact about marijuana is that it can contribute significantly to weight loss.
While it is unlikely to be touted by diet gurus or Slimming World anytime soon, science has already demonstrated the benefits of Cannabinoids such as CBD oil in helping to regulate the body’s metabolism.
In a world where obesity is endemic, the demand for products that can help to curb the growing problem of weight gain is at an all-time high.
Of course, when you hit the high street stores you will be bombarded with all types of products that claim they can help you to do just that.
Everything from Slim fast, to diet pills and “miracle supplements” have been sold and marketed to consumers as easy ways to combat obesity and weight gain.
Often these products are overpriced and the science behind them can be…dubious.
Take weight loss shakes for example. Many of the leading brands contain unhealthy chemicals and harmful sugars such as high fructose corn syrup, also known as glucose or glucose-fructose syrup which actually helps you to pile on the pounds and wreaks havoc with your nervous system.
And of course the problem with this approach to dieting is that it only works for as long as you are on the diet.
But what if there was one product that not only helped you to lose weight and control your metabolism, but also helped with other diseases and conditions?
Indeed, if that product contained no harmful chemicals and could be used as part of a general health programme, then surely it would be worth trying right?
This is where CBD oil comes in. While many have sworn by its effects, the evidence speaks for itself.
In fact, a recent study published in the American Journal of Medicine showed that marijuana users are much less likely than non-users to develop metabolic syndrome, which is a major factor in diseases such as diabetes, obesity and heart conditions.
Researchers from the University of Miami investigated the correlation between cannabis use and the different aspects of metabolic syndrome such as, high blood pressure, increased abdominal fat, elevated blood sugar, and cholesterol levels.
More than 8,000 people between the ages of 20 to 59 were tested. The study showed that while metabolic syndrome affects 22% of the population, less than 14% of those consuming cannabis products suffer from these conditions.
Of the young adult population, cannabis users were 54% less likely to have his condition.
Furthermore, those who had used cannabis products in the past were much less likely to develop metabolic syndrome.
A separate study published in the American Journal of Medicine found that CBD oil is effective in lowering fasting insulin levels. It also reduced levels of insulin resistance and increasing levels of HDL-C.
This helps to both treat and prevent conditions such as diabetes. In addition, by helping to reduce the blood sugar, CBD oil can help to lower BMI and aid weight control.
It also regulates the endocannabinoid system – the brain receptors that govern fat accumulation and energy intake in the body.
In fact scientists believe that it’s general regulatory effect on energy and fat intake in the body can help those who are overweight to lose it, and those who are underweight to maintain a healthier BMI.
While none of this suggests that using CBD oil alone can help to provide a magic weight loss solution in the absence of good nutrition and diet, it is nonetheless an important supplement and ally in the fight against obesity and weight gain.
