This Tower Filters Smog Out Of The Air And Turns It Into Diamonds

Dutch artist Daan Roosegaarde has created an innovative tower that sucks smog out of the air and turns it into beautiful diamonds. The Smog Free Tower, as Roosegaarde’s team calls it, has been deployed in cities across the world, including Rotterdam, Beijing, Tianjin and Dalian.
The tower filters an estimated 30,000 cubic meters of polluted air per hour. The structure is a 7-meter tall aluminum tower which uses only 1170 watts of solar power and positive ionisation technology.
Initially, the tower created a large volume of waste, until the team realized that the waste was made up of carbon.
“We had buckets of this disgusting material in our studio,” says Roosegaarde.

They devised a plan to condense the carbon down enough to where it would turn the carbon into diamonds, and it actually worked! Once the diamonds are retrieved, they are then used for rings, cufflinks, and similar products.
“It’s all about connecting new technology with creative thinking. If you start thinking about that, there is so much you can imagine, so much more you can do,” Roosegaarde said.
The team is expanding their vision to other deployable structures, including billboards. In a recent partnership with students from UDEM University in Mexico, Roosegaarde’s team set up a smog-eating billboard that works using the same technology, and cleans the air that an estimated 104,000 people are breathing each day.
