These Rare Blue Bananas Taste Like Vanilla Ice Cream

By Mayukh Saha

I am sure all of us want to eat healthy food that tastes just like our favorite dish? How many times have we wrinkled our nose at something that is impossibly healthy, but tastes like crap? Well, Blue Java Banana is here to make all those memories go away. It’s healthy and delicious, but it’s a bit rare. Well, we can all go that extra mile for something that has roughly the health benefits of broccoli but tastes like vanilla ice cream.

Grown primarily in South Asia, these bananas can survive some of the harshest environments. They can even grow at temperatures below freezing, but usually require 40 Fahrenheit for optimum growth. They turn thick and blue upon ripening, and is a way better substitute to most bananas and fruits we eat.

Here’s how to grow it in a place which isn’t South Asia.

  • Make sure that the area where you want to plant it gets enough sunlight & rain. If you are in the United States, they are grown in USDA’s zones, from 9b to 11.
  • Since the plantations grow up to 20 feet, it is inevitable that you have available space where they can grow without restraint. They need a sufficient amount of watering daily and you should also see to it that the roots go deep into the soil to prevent it from rotting.
  • Use NPK fertilizer in a ratio of 3:1:6 and apply it once a month. Now, while applying the fertilizer, keep in mind that you need to pour water too, in order for the fertilizer to be soaked in deep. Also, keep increasing the amount of fertilizer along with the level of growth your plant displays. Start with one cup of water in the beginning and then keep increasing the amount.
  • As they grow, make sure to provide them with ample sunlight and get rid of the shoots that would suck in the nutrients for the fruit. Remember, patience is the key. It takes 9 months for the plant to grow in its entirety. So, don’t lose patience and work for it.

The Blue Java Banana is extremely useful in its own right. It is high in potassium and has a multitude of minerals in it that makes it a very nutrient filled dish. Also, it is great for weight loss and would actually work well with low-fat ice cream.

Surprisingly, even the leaves are useful. Since they can withstand polarized temperatures, they can be used in place of aluminum foil. Or you could wrap your casserole with it. Or you could simply use it for boiling, heating, frying, roasting, or freezing. The leaves would be able to withstand anything you throw at it.

The banana’s nutrient composition is 0.3g of fat, 22.8g of carbs and 89 calories for every 100 gms. As you can see, it is way healthier and lighter than most other bananas.

Don’t forget, it’s extremely delicious. You can use it for smoothies, desserts, etc.
