5G and Earth Day: Corporate Takeover of Light Poles and Brain Function in CA and Near You!

By Sarah Aminoff, Patricia Burke, Stop 5G International and colleagues from Safe Tech Santa Rosa

Watch the video below where Julie Watts from CBS affiliate – KPIX – interviews Assembly Member Bill Quick about why firehouses were exempted from antenna installations.

One of the best ways for corporations to run rampant over municipalities (and human health) is to have “helpful” legi$lator$ pas$$ bill$ that over-ride community rights and local control. Like the smart meter roll-out, abuses of power are tested in pilot runs in state$ with cooperative public official$, (who receive “gift$$$$$” from the industry). The power abuses then extend like a California wildfire to other states.

When a bill to override community rights to rush wireless expansion was previously attempted in California, (SB-649) the effort was vetoed by Governor Brown, and opposed by the League of California Cities and the Sierra Club, CA.  Sierra Club California also opposed the FCC streamlining bills.

But like the mythological Hydra, when you cut off the head, two more grow back. The effort to throw CA under the bus for the FCC and the wireless industry has reincarnated into two new bills.

What’s cooking in California? Two Pro-Industry Bills That Abuse Community, Individual, and Property Rights…. One in the Senate and One in the Assembly

Take Action:  OPPOSE AB-537! Streamlining telecom bill rushing wireless expansion introduced by Assembly Member Quirk: (only known legislator to be a former rocket scientist and work for Silicon Valley computer industries).  Deadline to Comment on AB-537 is Thursday, April 8, Noon, PDT.   Deadline to Comment on SB 556 is April 14 at Noon, PDT. Send a Comment on AB-537, Lobby Your Local Government, Don’t Relinquish Municipal Oversight.  AB-537 will remove the essential role cities play in governing their streets and antenna placement by removing the word “municipal” with regard to wireless infrastructure from the state constitution. For California residents, scroll to the bottom of article for action steps! If you do not live in CA, contact the League of Cities or Municipal Association in your own state and advocate for protection of local control, property values, zoning and environmental protection. AB-537 specifies that it does not apply to fire department facilities. Ask why! (Remember the brain damage experienced by firefighters when cell antennas were placed on fire houses??? In the video)

The stage is being set for Telecom to rush applications. If the state of California no longer recognizes wireless infrastructure as a “municipal affair” subject to restrictions and limitations that can be enforced by cities and towns (AB-537), or Telecom now has uncontrolled access to any street light, traffic signal, utility pole or support structure (SB-556), imagine how much power Big Wireless will have stolen from local governments and from We the People!  THANK YOU in advance for taking prompt action! This is a crucial environmental issue as well as a question of public health and democracy.

REMINDER: Please focus your comments on local control, and not health concerns.

In their 2018 report, ConsumerWatch: 5G Cellphone Towers Signal Renewed Concerns Over Impacts on Health, Julie Watts and Abigail Sterling noted,  “While many are looking forward to faster cell service, many are also asking: Are there legitimate health concerns?”[1]

Hayward Assembly Member Bill Quirk stated, “5G can be a tremendous boom to California but only if it can be put up quickly and easily,” Quirk co-authored legislation that would make it even harder for cities like Piedmont to object to a tower. “I know scientifically that putting up these cell phone towers is safe,” he said. Quirk was asked, “Do you think that maybe you should consider putting a pause on legislation that speeds up these towers until there is definitive evidence that there is no harm?” His response: “We can do a lot of studies and there are people right now believe it or not who are sure the world is flat.”

As ConsumerWatch reported, “The International Association of Firefighters began opposing cell towers on fire stations, after firefighters complained of health problems. “These firefighters developed symptoms,” says Dr. Gunnar Heuser who conducted a pilot study on firefighters at a station with cell towers. “The symptoms included problems with memory, problems with intermittent confusion, problems with weakness,” Heuser said. Heuser says their brain scans suggest even low-level RF can cause cell damage and he worries about more vulnerable groups like kids. “We found abnormal brain function in all of the firefighters we examined,” Heuser said.

With so many health and safety issues surrounding 5G, constituents might be questioning whether decision makers need to have their heads examined.  Or is it their bank accounts that need scrutiny? Hayward Assembly member Dr. Bill Quirk,   It’s not rocket science. How much money have ATT, T-Mobile, Verizon, CTIA, and the like poured into California politics…with low latency and lightning speed, and no safety studies?

Wireless Facilities must stay under “Municipal” Control! Don’t let the State RUSH Small Cell Deployment… OPPOSE AB-537

Action Steps for California Residents AB-537

  • Contact your assembly rep. Ask to vote NO on AB-537 when it comes for a vote. Get your Rep’s contact info:
  • Contact your local government(City or Town Council) and ask them contact the League of California Cities’ to register opposition for AB-537. The League has already come out in opposition to SB-556 (Link), but has yet to offer a position on AB-537, which is equally as important as SB-556! Here’s the link to the League of California Cities: phone numbers and legal advocacy contact info. (The League’s mission is “To expand and protect local control for cities through education and advocacy to enhance the quality of life for all Californians.”)

Here’s a link to the AB-537 on the League’s site:
  • Important: April 8 at noon (Thursday) to submit comments for the CA Assembly Committee on Communications & Conveyance here. Instructions for submitting a message to the Committee: https://calegislation.lc.ca.gov/Advocates/

Talking Points:

  • Stop Telecom from rushing Small Cell deployment and upgrades to Telecom infrastructure! Allow local municipalities to control timetables regarding upgrades and modifications.
  • Request support for Municipal Internet Utility Services. Fiber to and through the premises is the only REAL way to end the digital divide.
  • Municipal internet utility services should be fiber, and decision-making should be local and not centralized under the domain of legislators in the pockets of industry.
  • Fiber optic the only REAL way to end the digital divide, and the safest way.

SB-556: Introduced into the CA Senate, this bill that would basically give Telecom uncontrolled access to any street light, traffic signal, utility pole or support structure. Please see the flyer to learn more about SB-556. This is a redo of a bill (SB-649) that passed both houses in CA but was vetoed on Oct. 15, 2017 by Governor Brown. We need to defeat this again! Committee hearing comments deadline is Wednesday, April 14th at noon.

Action Steps for California Residents SB-556: Send a Comment on SB 556; No Telecom Control over Streetlights!

SB-556: Introduced into the CA Senate, this bill that would basically give Telecom uncontrolled access to any street light, traffic signal, utility pole or support structure.

Talking Points for SB-556:

  • SB-556 removes local authority regarding Telecom’s access to utility poles, street lights, traffic signals and support structures.
  • It reduces property values.
  • We need to support fiber to and through the premises.
  • Keep locally controlled income stream. This bill will preclude municipalities from establishing fiber to the premises as a locally run and regulated utility that can be an income stream and can be used to subsidize internet services to underserved neighborhoods and rural areas.  Faster, safer, more secure, more reliable in wind, weather and with multiple users, and is the best way to eliminate the “digital divide” now and in the future
  • If you want to include safety, remember we are not trying to convince them that wireless is unsafe (even though we know the dangers).
