Aldi Supermarkets Will Be Giving Away Free Food To The Needy On Christmas Eve

By John Vibes

The discount supermarket chain Aldi has announced that they will be giving away all of their unsold fresh food after their stores close on Christmas Eve. The unsold food will be handed out to “less fortunate individuals” in order to “prevent food going to waste.”

The company will also be sharing large volumes of food with local food banks near its many locations.

A statement from the company read, “Aldi is offering local organizations the opportunity to receive surplus food from their stores on the afternoon of Christmas Eve. As Aldi stores will shut at 4pm on Christmas Eve until December 27, they will have a variety of good quality surplus food products that they will wish to redistribute in support of less fortunate individuals and to prevent food going to waste.”

Aldi says that they expect to give away about 20-30 crates of food at each store this year. Last year, Aldi’s Christmas charity initiative was able to give away just under a half-million meals to charities across the UK alone.

The effort was so successful that the supermarket decided to make the charitable giving a year-round thing by teaming up with the organization Neighbourly to donate food five days every week throughout the year, because leftover food is an everyday occurrence at any grocery store. 95% of Aldi’s stores now participate in the year-round donation program.

Aldi UK managing director of corporate responsibility Fritz Walleczek said that, “Last year we were able to reach thousands of people across the UK, and some charities were even able to prepare fresh meals that fed families well into the New Year. This is our third year of Christmas food donations and we’re hoping this year will be just as successful, and we look forward to working with local charities and food banks in the future.”
