How Vertical Farming Could Help Solve World Hunger [Infographics]

agricultureBy Amanda Froelich

By 2050, the human population on Earth will exceed 9 billion people. At present, 795 million people go to bed hungry each evening. If world hunger is still a pressing issue, how will it ever be solved within the next few decades?

An answer to this question might be vertical farms. According to some experts, vertical farms have the capacity to feed 50,000 people a 2,000 calorie per day diet for an entire year. If this is the case, why aren’t they located in every major city? Already, there are vertical farms that utilize hydroponic and aquaponic technologies in places like Wyoming, Chicago, and New Jersey. In the future, it’s likely they’ll be common everywhere. Or – at least, that’s the hope.

There are obstacles that stand in the way of constructing vertical farms – mainly high start-up costs and infrastructure, but they’re a necessary investment, some might argue, because of their potential to radically transform urban landscapes.
