Chiropractic For Migraines and Headaches
Over the last 5 years I have worked hand in hand together with a chiropractor. In that time, I have seen and heard some remarkable things from those that have received treatment for cluster, migraine or tension headaches. Many times people have walked in with a headache and after an adjustment the headache either disappears or reduces significantly. When the spine is properly aligned, the body is able to heal and be in a better state of balance, which reduces pain. Chiropractic is very scientific and the results can be seen (through x-ray) and experienced in a very short period of time.
It is well known that “stress” is the main factor behind why people get most headaches. I believe that when one goes through regular states of stress, the person literally carries that emotional stress in their neck and shoulders. From the emotional trigger, the muscles that are in the neck and shoulders will become tense and can cause a subluxation or misalignment of the spine, which creates pain. It can be the other way around as well, but my tendency is to believe that consciousness (emotion) is the dominant cause first resulting in subluxation.
Imagine if your spine has been out of alignment for years, putting pressure on your nerves, joints and muscles, creating unnecessary pain. The longer you have been misaligned the more work it will take to get you back aligned and healthy. A very simplistic way to think about it is if the alignment in your car is not right it will put undue wear on all the tires, struts, bearings, joints and over time can result in damage that can be very costly. It just makes sense that due to movements, falls, accidents, tweaks, twists, turns and other causes, our spine can become misaligned. All of these things can lead to or exacerbate tension headaches or migraines.
When the spine is out of alignment or various vertebrae are subluxated, this cuts of vital communication and healing capabilities to the organs, nerves and tissue that extend from that part of the spine. Over time, this will cause that part of the body to be impaired and to function in a suboptimal way. It is critical that the spine is aligned through regular visits to a chiropractor. This will ensure that your nervous system is communicating correctly with your whole body and is supplying what is necessary to make sure you as pain free as possible.
Some great news is that many insurance plans cover a certain amount of chiropractic treatments. Please check with your insurance provider to see what your plan covers. Since migraines and tension headaches are one of the most common health problems, it is covered for many people. Chiropractic treatment for headaches is much like receiving acupuncture. If you go once or twice, you may benefit, but going routinely will ensure that your body is getting the care it needs. Especially if your spine has been out of alignment for many years, one or two treatments will not be sufficient to fix the problem many times. Chiropractic treatment for migraines, cluster headaches or tension headache is a very well known therapy for reducing or eliminating pain. I highly encourage you to try it if you haven’t done so.
