A Majority of Americans Now Support Marijuana Legalization, According to a Recent Poll
Despite its extremely controversial past, it seems like people’s perceptions of marijuana have changed. According to a new national Quinnipiac poll, a majority of U.S. voters support marijuana legalization.
The poll also revealed that nearly nine in 10 voters say VA doctors should be able to prescribe marijuana in pill form to veterans suffering post-traumatic stress disorder. Although this statistic is less surprising – support for medicinal marijuana has been rapidly increasing across the country over the last few years – it shows that more and more people are becoming supportive of the drug’s medical uses.
“The fact that a majority of American voters favors legalizing marijuana in general shows how attitudes about the drug have changed,” said Tim Malloy, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Poll.

As part of the poll, participants were asked the question: “Do you think that the use of marijuana should be made legal in the United States, or not?” Fifty-four percent said marijuana should be made legal in the United States, while 41 percent said it should not be legalized, according to the Quinnipiac poll.
From these statistics, it was revealed that men are slightly more supportive of marijuana legalization in general, with 60 percent of men favoring legalization, compared to 48 percent of women. When it comes to age, the poll revealed that people in the aged 18-34, 35-49, 50-64 and 65 plus supported legalization 69 percent, 59 percent, 52 percent and 37 percent of the time, respectively.
When broken down further, the poll reveals that more than 60 percent of Democrats and independents favor legalization, while 62 percent of Republicans are opposed.
