Italian Gelato – Made In Your Blender!

Last night I decided I wanted ice-cream. But not just any ole ice-cream, real ice-cream. The Italian-style Gelato to be exact.

So, what did I do? I went ahead and created a recipe. I’ve been into Irish Moss lately. Chances are, unless you’ve been in the raw food world for awhile you haven’t heard of Irish Moss. Don’t worry, I’ve only learned of it about a year ago.

Irish Moss is a seaweed that is picked and sun-dried.

It is an excellent source of life-enhancing nutrients such as sulphur, protein, iodine, bromine, beta-carotene, calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, selenium, zinc, pectin, B-vitamins and vitamin C.

Essentially everything you’ve been looking for in your daily multi-vitamin! It also acts as a soothing aid to all mucous membranes and is said to ease ailments like gastritis, nausea, indigestion, constipation, and ulcers.

Because Irish Moss is a gelling agent, it’s used in the raw food world in desserts.

Looks like sea weed, right? That makes sense because it is!

Before you use it, it is soaked and then rinsed really well to remove all the sand. When you open a package of Irish Moss, the smell transports you to the beach. I love it!

Before I get started with my recipe, I want to show you a video on how Irish Moss is used. In this video, Kristen Taylor of Bee Green Foods, talks about Irish Moss and shows you her own chocolate pudding recipe. Looks good huh? Trust me, that pudding is rich!

In the following recipe, you can easily omit the Irish Moss if you don’t have any. Or you can order some from Kristen Taylor or Elaina Love, of Pure Joy Planet, and start making your own. These two sources I know and trust to havehigh quality Irish Moss.

The Delicious Ingredients

  •  3/4 – 1 cup mixed (frozen) berries (strawberries, blackberries, blueberries, and raspberries – use a combination of two, three or all)
  •  1 banana (frozen or ripe)
  •  3 tablespoons Irish Moss (optional – this can be omitted)
  •  1/2 cup nut mylk, real milk, or water
  •  1 tablespoon maple syrup or honey (more or less to taste)
  • 4 ice cubes
The Simple Process

  1. Add all ingredients to blender.
  2. Option to add the Irish Moss.
  3. Blend.
  4. Taste.

Add more sweetener if necessary. Add more liquid if necessary. If you’re using fresh fruit, you may have to add more ice. If you’re using frozen fruit, you may add less ice and more liquid.

Et voilà ! That’s amore!

Be sure and share with a loved one. My loved one likes chocolate sprinkles.
